How the Roof Color Affects The Temperature of the House

Here is a cool fact: During the summer, your rooftop could reach up to 150°F depending on the color of your rooftop.

The color of your roof can affect the temperature of your home.  The higher temperatures will affect how hard your cooling system has to work.  So what color roof will alter the temperature?

The Cool Roof
Generally it’s not associated with a color or temperature.  It’s a roof made up of materials reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than standard roofs. The materials can be made up of highly refelctive type of paint, sheet covering, or highly reflective tiles or shingles.

The benefits of a Cool Roof
They are known to keep the houses 50°F cooler when compared to other houses in the same weather conditions. The cooler temperatures will require less work from your cooling system. Then less work from your cooling system means a smaller energy bill at the end of the month. Since your roof is absorbing less heat and powerful sun rays, the life span of your roof is longer.

Dark Roofs
They’re just the opposite of cool roofs.  When you have a dark roof, the outside heat can raise the temperature inside your home’s highest room.  Have you ever noticed why it’s cooler in the basement and hotter on the 2nd floor? Hot air rises.

Unfortunately, your cooling system has to work harder to control the temperature.  Eventually, it’s compensating for the heat on the higher floors to keep the entire home at your desired temperature. At the end of the month, the result is a higher energy bill which you will see during the summer months.

The benefits of a Dark roof is it absorbs more heat during the winter months. The advantage of a dark roof is in colder climates with longer winters and short summers
